Hello all,
A little background: I recently purchased a Motorola Moto E (1st Generation) and I was very happy with my decision for the first couple weeks I had the phone. The only problem was that the OS often nagged me to update it, which I finally gave in and did. Unfortunately, after fully updating the OS and turning off all backup and sync features, the OS still sucked 40 MB of data per day! I only get 500 MB of data per month on my plan so I could not continue using that OS comfortably.
My goal is to root my phone and install a basic, no-frills OS that gives me total control. Of especial importance is that the OS does not use any background data unless I expressly permit it to. I was happy with the OS that came with the phone so I wouldn't mind using a Mod based on that older software. I enjoyed the look and feel of the newer OS too, but I can't use it with any of the bloatware or data sucking features.
I am a noob so I am asking for you to please link me to a specific OS that you recommend and please also link me to how to install Google Play on that OS. Here is what I have done so far, but I'm having problems and I'm willing to change everything.
Now I have rooted my phone as per the guide written by theunlockr (external links are disabled for me, sorry).
I installed the latest CyanogenMod on the Moto E (condor) page.
I installed Open Gapps per the CyonogenMod Wiki.
I didn't know which options to choose on the Open Gapps downloads page so I guessed and I chose ARM, 6.0, nano.
Unfortunately, my phone is definitely not in a sound working condition right now. Every time I boot (normal boot), it tries configuring Apps and then announces that installation failed and offers to send a report and there is no way to close the repeated dialogue boxes and actually use the phone.
*If* I am going to stick with my current OS, CyanogenMod, then I may need help uninstalling this incorrect Gapps software and replacing it with the correct version.
Thank you sincerely,
Bycote
